Okay, come on ideathinker that is the worst linkbait attempt ever; why
would Google be the next anything, and even throwing in the apples and
the bookers there for good measure!

Bare with me for a second and I'll explain, but first let me comment
on my heading: Yes, I agree, but it's ment to be funny as I grown
tired of all those "the next whatever" a long time ago (but that's for
another post)...

Now let me get to the apple and facebook and maybe you'll see what I mean.

What's apple known for (except the hardware)?
A great user experience (UX), and a tightly integrated echosystem.

What is Facebook Known For?
Beeing a defacto platform for connecting and sharing your life with
friends, also in a restrictive but unison design.

So now what is google doing?
They are implementing various design changes across their services all
to give the user a more integrated experience.

They just launched their attempt at social networking called google+,
but I think this goes beyond social. It's an indication on which
direction their heading in and how they see the future.

I think google is creating a platform independent platform for what
most people do with their devices in their daily life: Connecting,
sharing, and cosuming.

And it will look and feel almost the same wheter you're on windows,
windows mobile, os x, android, firefox, or chrome...

So you see I feel my heading was not that unjust.

Thank you so much for that nice letter about your magazine for business packed with good financial advice and industry insight, here is why I don't want to buy or take advice from you, and I'll tell you what you should or could have done instead to reel me in.

It's kind of humoristic really, you send me this letter in a premium envelope, with a letter printed on thick premium textured paper, for good measure you enclose a pamphlet on high grade paper, and just to top it of there is a printed members card with my name on in the same quality as creditcards ready for me to activate, that's all fine and impressive though the third time the same letter arrives, I'm thinking: and you supposedly offer financial advice and marketing insight? The sixth time the same promo that must have cost at least 4$ each - it's become a joke.

For that money you spent on those letters you could have done something that would have prob. worked much better, you could have given me 6 issues for free, or here is a campaign that would grab my attention better:
start with sending me a postcard informing me in a informal and peronal way that you're going to give me six issues of your magazine for free, when the first letter issue arrive send me a letter telling me that the faster i decide the more I'll save on the subscription

just a thought.

I posted before about the usefullness of twitter lists for organising friends and followers, a little look around though will tell you that lists are not widely followed, so whats the Point then? Enter paper.li

paper.li in itself will not do much for lists, but it makes it interesting keeping lists, but first let me introduce you to it: it's a service cooked up by a small privately held company at a university in switzerland that let you read twitter content as a daily newspaper.

You can create newspapers by entering keywords, twitter user, or twitter lists, in will then crunch trough the info fetching content from shared links. Tag it, organize it and put it out as an online newspaper for you to read. The closest comparison I can make it's what feedly does for rss feeds. You have to see it and try it to get just how amazing it is.

now back to how this has anything to do with twitter lists (which it hasn't really except for the idea I got), say you put various media outlets and bloggers twitter accounts onto a list together with a few twitter friends you have that shares a lot of usefullness - now browsing trough that list can be awkward and you have to look at it constantly not to miss anything - enter paper.li who digest what's been on the agenda and present it to you in a nice paper-like layout.

My Blog Looks Like Crap And This is Why!

I've had this blog for a long time, and the URL is not even close the name I go by so I more or less abandoned it, but I realized it serves a purpose for an (always) upcoming article on good blog design - or rather it represent what a good blog design is not, look at it, study it and comment on it. It has so many elementary fault that I think you should be able to learn from it just by pointing out it's flaws. So go ahead :)

Making The Most of Your Blog

So you have gotten the basic design and layout done and started posting a few enteries, and you covered the basic check list - what's next?

I cater to the idea you should keep things simple and fast to load so don't flood your post with images; while it is true that images can help attract the reader to many will have the opposite effect.

things you must have on your blog:
- retweet and share on facebook buttons and if you really serious add a few others to..
- a comment system, though many blog services offers good built in ones I would sugest trying a third party like disqus, intensedebate, or backtype (also you should use backtype to gather your own comments across the web). Why do this? Because it could help you broaden your reach because people who use these services get their comments in one place... More traffic
- use friendfeed to gather all your feed into one feed it makes it easier for people to follow you on the web, another option is flavors.me
- if you write a review or mention products you could concider including amazon links for revenue.
- tweet your postings

Should you add addons/apps?
I subscribe to the idea of a clean and simple blog, and would in general say no. It's a matter of taste really and if you do want apps then try and customize them as much as you can to integrate them neatly into your design... Ask yourself what the app will add to your blog... Keep in mind they might slow down your load time.

On Seesmic Look

Though Marked as a thing for newbies Seesmic Look is an interesting way to browse topics and trends in real-time on twitter - the first thought on the interface is Windows MediaCenter - it has the menu system has the look and feel of the windows media center where you click sideways and backways to navigate, not much unlike a tree navigation. it also has the glass look of vista (at least on vista which I tested it on).

What They Say:

Beginners learning to understand real-time can stay engaged and connected without even logging into Twitter, while experienced users can take advantage of Look's powerful features in creative and imaginative ways.

But It Could easly have much bigger potential then that. Playing around with Look I found it an entertaining way of browsing what's going on in entertainment or politics for that matter and take the pulse of the day.

The Design is lovely..
A simple easy to get started with interface was maybe the winning point of Twitter in the first place, but as the information masses grown this simple interfaces weakness comes to show, for many user trying out more advanced clients are Greek - hence I can see why Seesmic are marketing Look as something for beginners, you don't even have to sign-up to get started.

Note: the app was developed in close collaboration with microsoft and twitter.

Can you copyright a bunch of tweets?

Yesterday I linked to a long piece by attorney Brock Shinen discussing whether individual posts to Twitter are copyrightable and asked:

Does this mean that nearly all of Twitter's content is in the public domain? Or can you copyright a collection of tweets...the entire output of one person, for instance?

Brock sent along a short reply to my question, reprinted here with his kind permission:

This is information and not advice: It's possible (and likely) that the majority of individual Tweets are in the public domain. But copyright protection may extend to a compilation of otherwise non-protectable Tweets. The question of whether 'you' can do that as opposed to the author of those Tweets is tricky and would depend on how it's done. If the compilation is authored in such a way as to suggest a false designation of origin (i.e., that the person compiling the Tweets actually authored them), you might run into false designation claims. Also, as a practical matter, you may still get sued and forced to spend tens of thousands of dollars to defend a lawsuit you might otherwise win - if you can afford to get to trial. In the end, if you are a Tweet author and want to protect your Tweets, then you should probably compile them and seek protection with the US Copyright Office. If that works out for you, you're set. If the Copyright Office denies your application for registration, you have your answer.

So now it's official. The Us economy is in a recession and has been so for about a year. The longest since 82.

How will it affect spending on innovation, marketing, and product design?

Against common knowledge and proved examples, these are the aerias companies first cut cost. Even tough it's just in such times one really has to spend on this things. Will it be different this time. Time will tell.

Moreso, it's co-authored with renowed biz writer Robert Greene of "48 Laws of Power" book fame. It'll be an intresting read to read a book that tackle this subject updated for tomorows biz enviroment.

Playing around a VR playground

Lively is a well vivid idea with great potential, though it might not ever measure up to secondlife, I'm not so so sure it it need's to.. So far it wasn't all that lively on the various rooms. And stuff was limited when it comes to creating own designs and customizing your avatar.

If it's creator the G Inc. Pick their brains they'll soon see realise they have the synergy gointse already. What if one could use sketch up to create one's virtual lively houses?
And google chat for communication..
One could get an alert when buddies sang the doorbell etc also one should get option to save a snapshot of the avatar for use as buddieicon and profile image. Speaking of: why not hook your avatar up with your reallife self's orkut profile.

Tired of digital digits, jump on an emerging trend with roots in the victorian age. Calling cards or a personal buisness card if you like.

Colorful, artistic, or plain simple always with a personal touch. Keep a couple for serveral ocation. Just your name and details or mayabe a request to visit, or an invitation to a party or dinner.

This is sure to get noted and rememberd better then an sms, ical request, or a mail, moreso people can stick them on ther buletin memo bored, afterall if you put that much time into getting them the request it says something and they might be more eager to follow up.

It's google time (again)

what's the comotion this time? Well it's chrome, but I'll also touch in on google gears, google api, web applications, linux, and android.

I've found my self writing about google a lot on this blog, so let us make it clear im not employed or sponsored by the g inc.

So let's get to it, what's the comotion this time?
- Google have just released their own webbrowser, people have started to speculate about a google os again, also this realese comes just after the [html convention] in oslo this summer. Where the two camps of html x.x finaly agreed on a common path for the future.

A Google OS?
My guess is a not anytime soon, but maybe sort of.
In the past google have categorical denied working on various stuff and then a few months later released that stuff. So that would be a vote for. Also android the opensource mobile device os is a lovechild of google. Android runs on a linux core, so that would be a for. But not yet.

I wouldnt be surprised if there's a ubutu google editon poping up in near future utilsing various g inc opensource babies.

a free soft solution for your biz

I've been testing free soft solutions for awhile.. linux to be spesfic, and it works. But it might still be only for the brave to get it up and running; i'll get back to that in a paragraph or two.

there are great free software solutions around for almost all your buissines needs, most of them {opensource}, but what about the operating system it self?

sure servers has been dominated by {linux} and now it's coming to a desktop near you.

it's robust and fairly easy to install, i would like to mention two that stands out ubuntu and PCLinuxOS more so.

PCLOS Has maybe the best install tools. It creates a new patrition And finds existing ones with out any fuzz. {To be continued}

It's a show well worth watching, today for example they adressed security issues in Facebook
apllications, something I've raised questions about for some time. The BBCW created their own
plugin ap, to mind data from the users of their application, and guess what? it worked, nobody
checks what the third party plugins does.... I don't use a single plugin just for that reason

Funny though they also looked into the newly launched rival Myspace apps, which supports the
OpenSocial standard (which is an intiative by Google, which Facebook didnt join) and found these
to be much more secure..... maybe that could give new buzz for underrated soscial networks such
as Orkut.... then again; ignorance is a bliss.

My first impression of this logo was a sense of appealing, it's simple and easy to read, works both in small and large scale.

The dots makes me think of morse code whish of suting with reauters history. :) more comments later

Those of you who enjoy the free office suite openoffice (founded by Sun) just like me, might have ran into a ackward moment when forgeting to saving the doc as a MS Office file; because your going to share it with someone runing that system, NOT ANYMORE; now here is the answer.

I Just remembered back in earlys spring I bought this new Toshiba laptop and was intending on writing a few words about it and how I liked or didnt like it.... well summer almost past and no typing here yet... until I was browsing my phone for ol images.... well here is one of my old office space.... maybe in the near future I will remember to write about something else I was thinking about writing about... office space ... have a nice summer everyone :)

Why I do like this blog, I also like; picasa, keyhole, writley, and a few other google services, but wait u might know those two last ones, or maybe u do, after google bought the parents they where renamed: google earthe, and google docs & spreadsheets... by now u prob think i had to much or little morning coffee.. but no there's a point here.

its about what many used to slam ms for; buying to win markets instead of inventing.

another thing that tend to anoy me is their tedency to start own projects instead of supporting excisting or at least build around it. for example opensearch somewhat comparable to google co-op, or their web api which has many similarities to dojo kitchensink.

but really i must have gotten up on the wrog fot (not being ironic) cause i really do love the do no evil company, just trying to point out that they could ad a parentes; but try harder to do more good. thanx, work calling

I posted a cut-out of the article this blog reffers to in/on my public notes page.

Though I'm less then a MS fan, it should be noted that when counting users, you can only estimate... as serveral copies of a program could be used by serveral people, likewise one person could be using serveral copies on diffrent location. Further more downloads is the same... anyway..

Anyway what I'm saying is that Firefox and spreadfirefox should also take their own numbers as an estimate.. though clearly from a few web-servers log i've seen--- many many people use firefox, there's even a lot of localized version poping up (i.e. none enlgish).

...yes, firefox is still superior and people seem to fall in love with it, and though MS copied a few ideas (again) it didnt help.

Workplace Matters
by Tim McKeough, published in Newsweek recently covers some interesting matters on how arcitecture matters as a part of the workplace - not only as an antractive and inviting building with its surroundings - but also as much for the people working there.

Anybody got any similar good articles on landscape and building arcitecture, or how design matter and improves daily life in general? please post comment.... idtnkr
